Des Moines Mutual Aid: Taking Today, What Tomorrow Never Brings

Online store + Carrie and Scott updates

Appendix: Mutual Aid as Direct Action

Many of us at Des Moines Mutual Aid have lived in Des Moines for years struggling to find effective ways to connect with others interested in creating positive social change in our area. Often times we found it difficult to organize events or reach out to groups or individuals without having access to resources unavailable to us at the time. There are plenty of people out there doing great work–but not enough, it seems, working together.

We started this project because we wanted to meet others likes us who are tired of waiting for politicians to solve our problems. We have the power and ability to make some pretty big changes on our own and together. With any luck, this site will be at least part of that change and can help bridge the gap between those who have community-building projects going already and those who want to be part of things but don’t know where to start.

The fact is, outside the arena of party politics there exists an appetite for free activities and spaces that can be a point of departure for bigger and better things in Des Moines; people working together to make the lives they want without having to bend to the whim of a political party or organizations’ strict guidelines or platforms. This begins with mutual aid.

Online Store

We now have an online store that will operate as a fundraiser for our mutual aid projects and for people who have been victims of political repression. Activists are being harassed and jailed at an alarming rate and they need our support!

Check out the store for further information.

Support Carrie and Scott!

Carrie Feldman and Scott DeMuth are activists from Minneapolis, MN, who were subpoenaed to a federal grand jury in Iowa investigating animal rights vandalism from 2004. They both refused to cooperate with the grand jury, and were put in jail. Carrie is still being held on civil contempt of court. On 11/19, Scott’s civil contempt was dropped and he was indicted for conspiracy under the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act. Scott was released on 11/30 pending trial.

Until further notice, half of ALL proceeds from our fundraising will go towards Carrie and Scott’s legal defense. You can also donate by using the button on the side–those funds will also go towards their legal help.

Landmark Investigation Announced: “The Blueprint”

The Blueprint is the largest update of fur farm addresses in nearly 15 years and is the product of a 13,000-mile investigation of over 75% of the fur farms in the country.

Whatever your politics are regarding animal consumption, the fur industry is one of the most vile and cruel businesses out there.  Take a look at the list, particularly the ones in Iowa, and be surprised at what’s happening in your own backyard.

The Blueprint PDF Download

Included in the 62-page document:

*Massively updated state-by-state fur farm address list

*Photos of nearly 100 mink, fox, and lynx farms.

*Dozens of newly discovered, unpublished fur farm addresses.

The Blueprint: Fur Farm Intelligence Project Report was compiled with the intent of mapping the entire supply-side and infrastructure grid of the industry: from auction houses to feed suppliers, fox farms to research facilities.

The Blueprint contains new addresses and updated data on:

*Fox farms

Update on Carrie Feldman!

November 28th, 2009  |  Published in Announcements

Carrie Feldman is still being held on civil contempt and needs our support and solidarity. She’ll remain in custody over the long weekend as state officials enjoy time with their families. We can’t let them go back to an easy work day come Monday while they continue to hold our friend in civil contempt for taking a principled stand against state repression!

THIS MONDAY, November 30, CALL IN to Cronk’s boss, US Attorney Nicholas Klinefeldt, from 9am to 4pm to demand that they dismiss Carrie’s subpoena and release her immediately.

Monday November 30, 9am-4pm CST, (515) 473-9300

In the hearings so far, Cronk has attempted to use our statements of support against Carrie and Scott by twisting our words and arguing that using our right to free speech and to petition the government for a redress of grievances is a reflection of their bad moral character. Ridiculous, we know. While his arguments haven’t met with much success yet, we don’t need to give him anything with which to hurt our friends.

When you call in to demand Carrie’s release, please follow the sample script below and don’t allow them to trick you into saying something that they can twist around to hurt her:

*sample script*

Mr. Klinefeldt, I am calling to express my concern about the continued detention of Carrie Feldman for her refusal to testify to a grand jury in Davenport initiated by your Assistant US Attorney, Cliff Cronk. This grand jury is being used to investigate political activity, and by extension her refusal to cooperate makes her a political prisoner. She will continue to refuse to answer questions regardless of her detention, so her incarceration for civil contempt becomes a punitive action. I urge you to release Carrie Feldman from jail immediately.

Don’t forget to call Klinefeldt between 9am and 4pm on Monday! And get your friends to call too!

Hello!  It’s been a while since our last update.  There are new projects on the horizon that we will announce in the coming weeks, so hold tight! Also, the entire site is getting an overhaul and should be more functional soon. We’re inexperienced web-designers and are hacking our way through….

We are still alive and still committed to transforming Des Moines into a rad place to live.  Surprisingly, it’s taking us longer to overthrow capitalism than we thought….

What to expect:   a weekly radical news broadcast(NPR-style), stories of resistance from Des Moines and surrounding areas, free movie nights, lots of upcoming events, and more that we cannot say just yet!

Check back for more details.

***

For those of you unfamiliar with the event, we’ve posted a couple of informational pages to help you plug in:

From the organizers:

Bring something to share–take something you need!

Everyone is welcome at this monthly event at which people share goods, services, skills, performances, stories, crafts, food, games, music, clothing, furniture, plants, and other resources.

In a time of recession and economic crisis, events such as this one are especially important, as they demonstrate how communities can maintain themselves even when the capitalist system fails them. If you are unemployed, facing foreclosure, or struggling with debt, or if you care about others who may be facing these challenges, come participate in building this community infrastructure! We can all prosper with or without the economy, if we base our lives and interactions on cooperation rather than competition.

Better than a yard sale, the Really Really Free Market has no price tags: there is no buying, selling, or exchanging involved. At this market, everything is strictly free. This event is a celebration of the cooperation and gift-giving that make life possible beyond the constraints of market capitalism: it is an afternoon when social status has nothing to do with what you own, and when giving and receiving happen directly rather than being administered through an institution or organization. As at other Really Really Free Markets across the U.S. and around the world, we aim to create and participate in a world in which resources are held in common, the community meets the needs of the community, and “free” means just that: really, really free.

Nothing is required for participation, but think creatively about the skills you have and could teach, the useful or beautiful things you have and don’t need, or the resources you might be able to bring and share.

Because there’s enough for everyone
Because sharing is more fulfilling than owning
Because corporations would rather the landfills overflow than anyone get anything for free
Because a beautiful day outside together is better than anything money could buy
Because “free trade” is a contradiction in terms
Because no one should go without food, shelter, entertainment, and community
Because life should be a picnic, but it’s up to us to make it one

BECAUSE THERE IS TOO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH!
